ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -

In Minnesota we like to joke that there are two seasons - winter and road work. In this week's Throwback Thursday, it seems as though that may have been the case even in the early 20th Century.

With the help of the History Center of Olmsted County, we took a look back at what road work looked like back on October 17, 1911.

The picture shows crews paving the corner of Zumbro and Main Streets, which are now First Avenue and Second Street SW.

In the late 1800s, many American cities paved their streets with wood blocks, rather than bricks. The wood blocks provided a much quieter road than bricks, so when horse drawn carriages passed over them, the wood muffled the clattering of hooves and wheels.

Wooden paving blocks fell out of use in the early 1900s with the rise in popularity of automobiles, since the rubber tires were much quieter.
