ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -

This Throwback Thursday, we're teaming up with the History Center of Olmsted County to take a look back at the dedication of a Rochester icon - the Plummer building.

Dr. Charles Mayo dedicated the brand new medical building on September 16, 1928. It's named after Dr. Henry S. Plummer, who helped create the group practice system the clinic is known for today.

After its construction, the Plummer building became the tallest in Rochester, and would hold that distinction until 2001 when the Gonda building opened.

The Plummer building's height makes it easy to see, and it is frequently lit up in support of various causes, and during the holiday season. Music can also be heard coming from the building's tower, as it houses Carillon bells, which chime at certain times of the day, and sometimes play special concerts.

The 15-story structure held an extensive library and housed patients, although that's no longer the case today. Now, the building is used for administrative, academic and support purposes.

The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1969.
