CHATFIELD, Minn. (KTTC) -

The Chatfield High School Service Club has been making a difference in Southeast Minnesota one service project at a time. The student-run group has tackled more than 20 events in just the last year.

They have put together Christmas gift drives, blood drives, cleaning up highways, and cooking meals at the Dorothy Day House in Rochester.

But for this group of dedicated teenagers, balancing many activities, the service is much more than just a resume builder.

“I'd say it's more meaningful than just doing it for the sake of a scholarship or looking more accomplished in your high school career,” said one of the group's leaders, MaKayla Pederson. “We're not doing it for the recognition or the awards that we get for it or anything like that. It's just for the good of others and to help others.”

“And it's actually kind of fun!” another group leader, Kaitlyn Griffin, chimed in. “I actually really enjoy it, to be honest.”

Even though these two have graduated, they'll continue to volunteer all summer long.

The Chatfield Service Club will be recognized Wednesday at Rochesterfest, along with the other 10 Who Make A Difference recipients.

Gov. Mark Dayton has vetoed a GOP-backed bill that would increase penalties for protesters who block freeways or transit lines. The debate started last year in response to protests over officer-involved shootings of two black men that shut down interstates and blocked the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
