ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -

The Rochester Reading Champions help provide people of all ages with the gift of literacy, and the group is one of KTTC and United Way of Olmsted County's 10 Who Make a Difference.

The program partners with the Rochester Public Library, the Reading Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester and the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center to provide free private tutoring sessions for people who struggle with reading.

The Reading Champions use something called the OG method to help students learn the sounds of all the letters and the rules that go with them.

RRC volunteers go through 120 hours of training to make it all happen.

"I really feel it's important to give back to the community, and seeing people making progress and reach their potential is the greatest reward," said volunteer Jane Mervosh.

Volunteers say literacy correlates with things like poverty and incarceration, so they hope by addressing literacy in the community they can address these issues.

Rochester Reading Champions volunteers will be recognized with the rest of the 10 Who Make a Difference at an award ceremony during Rochesterfest next Wednesday.

Gov. Mark Dayton has vetoed a GOP-backed bill that would increase penalties for protesters who block freeways or transit lines. The debate started last year in response to protests over officer-involved shootings of two black men that shut down interstates and blocked the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
