DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - This year's Iowa State Fair set an attendance record, with more than 1.13 million people visiting the 11-day event in Des Moines. The fair announced Monday the fair that wrapped up Sunday had an unofficial attendance of 1,130,071. That topped the previous record of 1,117,398 set in 2015. The busiest day was Saturday, Aug. 12, when 120,833 visitors were counted at the fair. The Iowa State Fair has been held since 1854. Next year's fair will be held Aug. 9-19.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - Authorities are investigating the 10th homicide of the year in Davenport. Police say officers sent to check a report about shots fired found 28-year-old Marcus Hampton, who died later at a hospital. No arrests have been reported.

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Officials have announced the winner of online balloting for new license plates that will grace Iowa vehicles in the years to come. The Iowa Transportation Department said Monday that the design dubbed "City and County Reboot" received more than 113,000 votes. The state plans to begin issuing the new plates next year

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - An Oct. 17 trial starting date has been scheduled for an Iowa parolee accused of fatally shooting an Iowa City taxi driver. Court records say 41-year-old Curtis Jones has pleaded not guilty to robbery and first-degree murder.
