Spokesperson: Alma ethanol spill did not have adverse effects on environment

ALMA, WI (KTTC) -

Authorities with the BNSF Railway are saying a huge ethanol spill during a train derailment in Alma, Wisconsin did not have adverse effects on the environment.

As many as 32 train cars left the tracks, spilling tens of thousands of gallons of denatured alcohol into the backwaters of the Mississippi River in a wildlife refuge on November 7.

BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth told KTTC Friday that there are no signs of damage to fish and aquatic life there.

The EPA and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has gathered hundreds of samples of water, sediment, mussels and fish, and all of them have shown there is no harm to the environment.

There is still no word on the cause of that derailment.
