Destination Medical Center Corporation Board tables discussion on Saint Marys Holiday Inn proposal

A plan to potentially transform a parking lot across from Saint Marys Hospital into a 6-story Holiday Inn is being pushed back for the time being. Destination Medical Center Corporation board members say there's just too many questions surrounding the project and how it will be funded.

The DMCC board voted nearly unanimously on Thursday to table the discussion until the next board meeting, with city councilman Ed Hruska as the only dissenting vote. St. Cloud developer Larry Brutger's plan, which includes a subway connection from the hotel to Saint Marys, is estimated to cost $63 million, with $5 and a half million slated to come from TIF funds related to DMC.

However, board members said they did not want to rush to give the green light, as they had too many questions about the proposal to sign off on using public money for the hotel.

"We certainly do not want to be an obstacle for development, but at the same time, we have to be prudent in our early decisions because they send signals on how we're going to operate going down the road," said DMCC board member James Campbell.

Economic Development Agency chair Lisa Clarke will create a work group in order to determine the hotel's potential impact on the Saint Marys area. The next DMCC board meeting will be March 24th
