DECORAH, Iowa (KTTC) -

An Iowa K-9 died over the weekend, about a week after retiring from the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said K-9 Ricky died Saturday. Family members and law enforcement held a private memorial service that afternoon. The K-9 retired on November 13 after being diagnosed with an unexpected illness.

Ricky has worked and lived with his handler, Steve Nesvik, as a drug and track dog for the past seven years. The Belgian Malinois is also trained with bite and attack skills. The sheriff's office said the pair has been a valuable asset.
