Homeowner in Rochester drug tells us he uses marijuana for medical purposes

Posted: Updated:
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -

An investigation is underway after a large amount of marijuana was found growing inside a Northeast Rochester home. The man who lives there is a paraplegic and says he uses the marijuana solely for medicinal purposes. However, Rochester police said the other items found in the home might suggest otherwise.

Jorge Velez was known as a talented soccer player growing up, and has the medals to prove it. But five years ago Velez suffered life threatening injuries after being involved in a car crash. That crash caused his digestive system to rupture, and since then he's had a half dozen surgeries and nearly 100 blood transfusions. But Velez, the homeowner, said he does not qualify as a candidate for legal medical marijuana, and that the marijuana police confiscated helps with his chronic stomach pain, and nausea.

"I just think it's unfair, to my family that they say it's a safer community now," said Velez.

Rochester police raided the home on the 2600 Block of Lisa Lane Northeast around 9:30 a.m. Thursday finding 34 marijuana plants, 200 grams of dried marijuana, and other unknown narcotics, that are now being tested by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Velez said one of the guns seized was for protection that he legally purchased, and the $1-thousand in cash taken from the home was gift money from recently celebrating a 24th birthday.

"Probably the worst birthday I ever had. They took my birthday money, they took the jewelry my family got me," said Velez.

But Rochester police say things don't add up.

"That doesn't explain why LSD recovered other hallucinogens within the home as well as a number of firearms including one firearm that appeared to be intentionally modified and may be illegal under federal statues," said Capt. John Sherwin of the Rochester Police Department.

Complicating matters, the house is located in a school zone near Schaeffer Academy. Velez said his doctor is fighting to get him into the medical marijuana program.
