Winona Amtrak station cutting all staff due to plummeting in-person ticket sales

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -

Amtrak travelers will find the Winona train station a little emptier by the end of the month. The rail train company has announced it will no longer be staffing the Winona stop come the end of August.

The staff member there confirmed to us the station will be removing his position sometime near the tail end of August.

It is all apart of a company-wide effort to disintegrate certain staffed Amtrak stations seeing a decline in ticket sales.
In our area, St. Paul and La Crosse stations will remain staffed, according to the Winona Daily News. This means travelers will not be able to call in to check times or purchase their tickets at the station, but rather do so online.
The program is a reflection in the rise in online ticket purchasing, and the ability to check arrival and departure times on the Amtrak phone apps.

Winona Mayor Mark Peterson told Winona Daily that someone will remain employed to clean, open and close the station, but that is all for now.
