Cost to fill up at Rochester gas stations sharply declines overnight

Drivers around Southeast Minnesota woke up to a welcome surprise at the pump on Wednesday morning. While a gallon of gas averaged $2.57 throughout Rochester on Tuesday, those prices fell by as much as thirty cents a gallon at some stations overnight and continued to fall during the day.

The average gas price in the metro area has plummeted to $2.46, twelve cents less than Tuesday's average. However, many gas stations in the city offered fuel much cheaper than the average. Some stations began the day at $2.27 per gallon and dropped to $2.23 by the afternoon, and one station event went as low as $2.08 a gallon.

According to an unnamed gas station manager in Rochester, the steep drop was caused in part to keep up with Costco's members only prices, which are far below average. Costco's prices started at $2.12 Wednesday morning--seven cents lower than any other gas station in the area--and dropped further to $2.05 in the afternoon.

While some gas station managers said Costco's prices are too low to be legal, drivers are enjoying the low cost of competition.

"I didn't know anything about it, but I drove in here and saw the gas prices," said Mike Johnston of Rochester. "When I saw it was $2.12 per gallon, I decided this is a good time to fill up."

The gas prices in Rochester are significantly lower than the state average, which was $2.55 per gallon on Wednesday. While the prices for unleaded fuel have dropped, diesel fuel has stayed about the same since Tuesday.
