ST. PAUL, Minn. (KTTC) -- Patients with certain medical conditions can officially begin purchasing medical marijuana in Minnesota; however, Rochester still has a bit of a wait.

The state's new medical marijuana program began Wednesday with the opening of patient centers in Eagan and Minneapolis, but the Rochester dispensary off of East Circle Drive is not open just yet. The dispensary, run by Minnesota Medical Solutions, will open in the middle of July.

Eventually, there will be eight locations in the state where patients with qualifying conditions can obtain medical cannabis. In addition to Minneapois, Eagan and Rochester, dispensaries will be located in St. Cloud, Eden Prairie, St. Paul, Hibbing and Moorhead. Each location will be operated by one of two approved manufacturers, Minnesota Medical Solutions and Leafline Labs.

The Minnesota Department of Health has been working to build the program since the state legislature approved the use of medical marijuana in 2014.

Minnesotans with qualifying conditions who are interested in using the drug will have to complete a registration process through the state. Pharmacists at distribution centers determine what form and dose is right for each patient. The program allows for pill and liquid form cannabis to be distributed to patients in Minnesota.

According to the Department of Health, 90 patients in Minnesota have been approved in the registry to pick up medical cannabis starting Wednesday.
