READS LANDING, Minn. (KTTC) -- It's easy to zoom past Reads Landing on Highway 61. But if you do, you're missing a piece of Minnesota history.

One of the few buildings in the community -- the Wabasha County Historical Society Museum -- is itself a piece of history. The schoolhouse that houses the museum was built in 1870, making it the oldest surviving brick schoolhouse in Minnesota.

Across the street from the museum is where old school Reads Landing meets news school. The Reads Landing Brewing Company is a museum of sorts.

"We wanted to put a lot of the history of the area so we went up to the museum and got a lot of their photos and put that up," said Assistant Brewmaster Tom Gibson. "We're always looking for new photos but they're kind of rare and hard to find."

But the photos that decorate the brewery aren't the only look back into time.

"We like to name a lot of our beers after local history," said Gibson.

Owner and Brewmaster Bob Nihart takes pride in handcrafting several beers on site.

"I was a home brewer and did it probably for five or six years before I started this process and just enjoyed it and the response from my friends," said Nihart.

Several years ago, Nihart turned the old saloon and cabin into what it is today.

"We just kind of made it a cabin downstairs where the restaurant is and it was that way until about six years ago when I started demolition and work on the restaurant," he said.

Reads Landing Brewing Company also features an ever-changing food menu and a constantly great river view.

Reads Landing makes up a tiny piece of Mississippi River shoreline. But for anyone craving a look back in time or a cold beer, Reads Landing is a can't miss destination.
