Chatfield first grader heads to Colorado for leukemia treatments

Posted: Updated:
CHATFIELD, Minn. (KTTC) -- Caleb Eide is a first-grader at Chatfield Elementary School, but he hasn't been in class lately because of his battle with leukemia. His doctors at Mayo Clinic told his mom on Sunday there's nothing more they can do for him.

Caleb's classmates in Chatfield have been trying to keep his spirits up and raise money for his medical costs as well. Earlier this month they waged a "penny war" to do what they could to help their friend.

Caleb's mom wrote on his CaringBridge web page that the family left Mayo Clinic on Sunday and headed immediately to Colorado to try to get help from someone else.

"How does a mother handle this news, I don't know," said Crystal Eide on CaringBridge. "If it weren't for my mother's strength, I'm ashamed to admit it but I think I'd have given up, but we're not giving up yet."

There's been an outpouring of notes of support and prayers for Caleb on CaringBridge and there's also been a special Facebook page set up to help his supporters keep up on how he's doing. For now, Caleb's fight continues in Colorado.
