ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- The city of Rochester will buy the historic Chateau Theatre in downtown Rochester for $6 million.

The deal was announced during a news conference at 12 p.m. on Monday in front of the theater in Peace Plaza. The city would borrow $5.5 million to buy the building. Mayo Clinic would donate the remaining $500,000 needed to buy the theater.

It's not known how the theater building will be used. Members of the DMCC Board, officials from the city of Rochester and Mayo Clinic announced the purchase.

The Rochester City Council is scheduled to vote on the purchase agreement at its April 6 meeting.

For more than 15 years, the Chateau Theatre building housed the downtown Barnes & Noble bookstore, but closed at the end of December when its lease expired. At that time, local leaders promised the iconic building would remain.

The theater property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.
