ST. PAUL, Minn. (KTTC) -- There is a push in the Minnesota Legislature to help save lives, as the amount of overdoses on opiate drugs continues to rise.

But Minnesota lawmakers want to combat that increase, by helping purchase the drug Narcan. Narcan is a drug that can reverse the effects of an opiate overdose, including heroin. In emergencies, the effects of the nasal mist can last long enough to get the victim to the hospital.

The potentially life saving drug can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000 a unit, which can become costly when every officer of law enforcement or firefighter in a department carries it.

As overdoses in the state continue to increase, the price of Narcan had increased 60-percent since December.

If the bill passes to help fund Narcan, it would allocate about $1 million to pay for the drug over two years for agencies and provide training.

When the price of Narcan first increased in December, the Rochester Fire Department had already purchased a large quantity of the drug to cover their need for some time.
