Dayton pitches U funding bump, awaits end to MnSCU fight

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Gov. Mark Dayton wants to send more state money to the University of Minnesota, but he's won't discuss extra spending on the other state college system until it works out an internal dispute.

Faculty and students in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system have clashed with their chancellor over his proposed system revamp. Dayton says he won't include additional funding for MnSCU in his budget proposals until the parties work out their differences.

Dayton on Tuesday proposed $123 million in extra spending on the University of Minnesota the next two years. That includes $30 million to recruit top researchers at the medical school.

His pitch would fund about three-fourths of the school's $127 million request outside of the medical school. That includes money to hold down tuition increases.
