WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is urging President Barack Obama to come up with ways to work with Republicans to shore up Medicare and Social Security and to balance the budget, not just propose, in his words, "more tired tax hikes."

Obama is expected to include in his State of the Union speech tonight calls for increasing taxes on the wealthy, making community college free for many students and expanding paid leave for workers. The proposals stand little chance of winning approval from the new Republican majority on Capitol Hill.

But key elements of the economic proposals appear to be aimed at driving the debate on income inequality and middle-class economic issues. Those issues are likely to be part of the 2016 election.

Obama's chief of staff, Dennis McDonough says the president is determined to improve the lives of middle-class Americans. He tells "CBS This Morning" that Obama will not hesitate to veto legislation that doesn't improve the lot of the middle class.
