Rochester Cub Scouts have fun in the snow

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- To Cub Scouts, even Mother Nature herself is no obstacle to having a good time outdoors.

On Saturday, Cub Scouts at Gamehaven Scout Reservation in Rochester sledded, hiked, and built snowmen as part of the Polar Cubs program. The program takes place every winter weekend and encourages Cub Scouts to come outdoors even when the weather is a bit chilly.

It wasn't only the scouts that had fun; the parents of the scouts also came along and rediscovered their inner child.

"To see the parents out here playing right along with their kids, whether it's building snowmen or going down the tubing hill, is great," said program coordinator Dustin Olson. "It's great to see that sense of joy in both the child and the parent.

The Polar Cubs program has been a fixture for Rochester Cub Scouts for fifteen years. In fact, some alums came back to help out and share their memories of their time in the program.

"This was my favorite time of the year," said Jared Wertish, a former Cub Scout who has worked his way up to become an Eagle Scout. "In the summer I was coming here, but this was the fun time."

Those fun times can make the harsh Minnesota winter not even matter.

"All of a sudden, on that cold day, you're not thinking about how cold it was," said Olson. "It was fun. You just did something enjoyable."

The Polar Cubs program will continue for every weekend until the weekend of February 14.
