WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Whether it's hats, bags, toys, or trinkets building a local business isn't easy, but buying local is something that Winona County understands.

"Winona is very much a buy local kind of a community which is what keeps me coming back," said craftswoman Shelly Daood.

Daood owns the hat and bag company Bound to be Creative, and for the last three years she's been making the Handmade Neighborhood sale in Winona her home away from home.

"It's neat to see people come in and pick things up, and you see them with bags from others vendors," said Daood.

Ever since Daood began making hats for herself and her children she got a following.

"I would walk around with it, and by word of mouth people would be like, "Where'd you get that hat?  I love that hat," explained Daood.

Now she is making sure that those around her look good too.

"I just want them to love what they are going to wear, and what they are paying for, I want them to love it," said Daood.

Her neighbors are responding by helping her, and other local craftsman, turn their gifts into businesses.

"Either I made a hat for them, or last year they didn't purchase and they knew I was going to be back, or like the woman before, she just happened to come across me, and she needed a hat, and I was here for her," said Daood.

It's a bond shared between customer and salesman, or in this case, between neighbor and neighbor.

Winona will be active throughout the weekend of November 22 with a number of shopping events geared toward buying local.
