Interest in 'bearding' has taken off

I know my TV bosses will never agree to this--but I'm thinking of growing a beard.

It's something I've never done before. When I was in Seattle Washington last week on the Destination Medical Center leadership trip, I couldn't help but notice that just about every other guy had a beard. Young. Middle age. Old.

And now, I want one.

In fact, in two weeks, the World Beard and Mustache Championships will take place in Portland. According to CNN, more than 300 bearded guys (...and maybe one or two gals) will be competing in a variety of categories including Full Beard Natural, Full Beard Styled Mustache, Imperial, and Freestyle. Thousands more are expected to come along for the spectacle. I might be one of them.

As one guy on CNN said, men are competitive. It's in our nature. Why shouldn't we compete over our beards?

Stay tuned. I'm sort of a competitive guy. And for the record, my beard won't have spikes like the guy pictured with this story. THAT looks like too much work!
