DMC planners unveil transportation ideas

Posted: Updated:
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Destination Medical Center planners presented ideas for the future of transit in Rochester at Thursday's public forum.

Those plans include what is being called a "transit terrace" near Central Park that would include extensive parking and serve as a transit hub into downtown Rochester.
Planners envision "modern street cars" running as often as every five to seven minutes that would connect Saint Marys, the downtown Mayo Clinic campus, the transit terrace, Government Center and other parts of downtown.

"What we are trying to create is really a downtown where people can park once and circulate, where we've got really fantastic streets for walking, strolling, lingering, as well as commerce," said Tom Brennan, a transportation planner with Nelson/Nygaard.

The plans also include what is being called a "city loop" which is a bike and pedestrian urban trail system that would connect with bike and pedestrian paths outside of downtown.

Planners will take feedback from Thursday's meeting, and present updated ideas at another forum on November 13.
The final development plan is expected to be finished in December, when it will then enter a two month public comment period.
