The first U.S. president gets a face lift

The nation's first president is getting a high-tech face-lift. A full-length portrait of George Washington will undergo a digital analysis and restoration.

Gilbert Stuart's painting is considered to be the definitive portrait of Washington as president. It was painted in 1796 and now hangs in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

Conservators will use digital x-rays and infrared imaging to examine the work. Yellowing varnish will be removed to reveal the original colors and details.

Work is scheduled to be completed in 2018, for the 50th anniversary of the museum.
