Man arrested after assaulting woman, barricading himself inside home

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Rochester man is in custody after police say he held a woman hostage all Tuesday night, assaulting and choking her. Police say after the woman was freed, officers were engaged in an hour long standoff with the man.

Officers say they were alerted to a woman screaming early Wednesday morning and arrived to a home to discover the woman had been held against her will and assaulted for hours.

Police took 41-year-old Joseph Rodriguez into custody after an hour long stand-off. They say it all started when they were called to the 3500 block of 21st Avenue Northwest around 6:15 a.m. when neighbors reported they had heard a woman screaming.
Officer knocked repeatedly on the door and the woman escaped through the back of the house. The woman told police Rodriguez was her boyfriend and that he had been drinking and assaulted her throughout the night. She says Rodriguez choked her and kept her from leaving. Police say her injuries are consistent with her story.

After the woman was freed, police say Rodriguez barricaded himself inside the home for an hour.  He finally surrendered to police around 8:10 a.m. He could face charges of assault and false imprisonment.
