Double homicide suspect hospitalized in Milwaukee

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- Authorities say double homicide suspect Andy Steele is hospitalized in Milwaukee, as prosecutors decide how to go forward with Steele, and whether to conduct a court hearing in his hospital room.

Authorities say the 39-year old Steele - a former Dane County sheriff's deputy who left the force this summer after being diagnosed with ALS - is  the lone suspect in Friday's fatal shootings of Steele's wife, Ashley Steele, and his sister-in-law, Kacee Tollefsbol.

Assistant Dane County District Attorney Michelle Viste tells 27 News Steele may have been taken to a Milwaukee hospital to avoid both Steele and one of the victims being taken to the same Madison hospital Friday, or because the nature of his injuries, or both. Viste says prosecutors are discussing where Steele's initial court appearance will take place. Fitchburg Police officials say Steele's injuries are consistent with being self-inflicted, but have not detailed the injuries, nor confirmed a suicide attempt.
