Summit Square residents warned of motor vehicle thefts

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Police say the number of vehicles being stolen in Northwest Rochester is on the rise.

Residents at Summit Square apartments are being warned of motor vehicle thefts after a car was stolen from the complex earlier this week. Managers are reminding residents to always lock their car doors, never leave their cars running, and to not leave a spare key near their vehicle.

The recent rise in vehicle thefts has one longtime Summit Square resident taking precautions. "One of our tenants had lost their car, their car ended up missing. It scares me because we like to have our windows open at night, I live on the first floor," said Julie Lee.

In order to prevent a total loss, managers at the apartment suggest is installing a GPS tracker in vehicles so that if a car ever is stolen a signal can be picked up by police of the cars location.
