Thousands brave the heat for RAGBRAI

Posted: Updated:
FOREST CITY, Iowa (KTTC) -- On a hot and humid day it's easy to think about a dip in the pool, but the bike riders of the RAGBRAI bike ride pass by the cool waters, and instead set their thoughts on finishing an 80-mile leg of the ride across Iowa.

"Everybody is in the same situation.  It's not like you have it worse than anybody else, so if it is hot you know it's hot for the next guy.  If it's humid, it's long distance you know everyone is suffering through the same thing," said Chicago based rider Mark Suri.

The thousands of riders direct themselves through difficult terrain.

"There aren't many big hills, but my dad and I are going on a tandem, so riding up them is really hard," said Mark's daughter Dana Suri.

Each person navigates the heat in different ways some prefer the most logical method.

"You got the misters that come through you, so they got the hoses up that cools you down nicely," said Mark Suri.

Mark's daughter enjoys "the most fun method."

"We've been swimming we have been going to pools through the week, so they have been great," said Dana Suri.

Other riders take the road less traveled by.

"Riding behind the prettiest girl I can find," laughs James O'Neill.

The heat remains an ever growing challenge even in the 42nd year of the event.

"Well I hadn't done it for about 10 years, and I was anxious to see if it had changed, and it's just like it always was it's a lot of fun.  It's the same RAGBRAI.  It's a great ride," said O'Neill.

They will ride on in unrelenting heat with the cool thought of conquering Iowa.
