DNR finds invasive carp further north

HASTINGS, Minn. (KTTC) -- The DNR is investigating today after two invasive carp were discovered in the cottage grove area of the Mississippi River.

Two commercial fishermen under contract from the DNR netted one 40-pound Bighead Carp, and one 20-pound Silver Carp in pool 2 of the Mississippi near Hastings.

It's the first time Bighead and Silver Carp have been found that far north, but it does not mean there is a breeding population there.

These fish are known to eat large amounts of plankton, starving native fish, and impacting the base of the food chain.
