Street hockey tournament takes over downtown Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Skates and sticks were flying Sunday afternoon as dozens of kids took over downtown Rochester for the 17th Annual Shjon Podein Children's Foundation Benefit.

Children between the ages of 4 and 11 got a chance to show off their skills on the pavement in a street hockey tournament. Team 25 was started by Rochester native and former NHL player Shjon Podein and his wife Sherry in 1997. The mission of the foundation is to improve the quality of life and create an environment of caring and community support for children facing extraordinary difficulties in their lives.

It's a legacy Shjon hopes to pass on to a younger generation.

"I can't tell you the countless hours that people have given to help me reach my goal," said Podein. "I could go on and on about the coaches I had growing up, but without them giving up their time to teach me how to be a better hockey player, I would have never gotten to the levels that I got to."

The event continued Sunday evening with a block party featuring live music from GB Leighton and the Legendary Booker Mini Band.
