10 Who Make a Difference: AARP Tax-Aide Program

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Tax time is typically a stressful period for many people. Imagine if you can't otherwise afford someone to help you prepare those taxes.

If that's the case, then the AARP Tax-Aide Program can come to your rescue. In fact, program volunteers have been helping thousands of people prepare their taxes for more than 35 years. And it's free for individuals and families living in Olmsted and Dodge counties, making under $52,000.
District coordinator Ella VanLaningham said the mission of the nearly 60 volunteer tax counselors is to help clients meet their tax obligations while getting them the largest refund they're entitled to.

"Well, we all are a little nuts because we like to do taxes and work with numbers. But the bottom line is we want to give back to the community and help people. And people are always grateful we're doing it," she said.

The AARP tax-aide program has three major host sites including the Salvation Army Community Center in Rochester.
Last year, volunteer tax counselors provided countless hours, helping 4,200 people with their taxes.

And that's why the AARP Tax-Aide Program is receiving a "10 Who Make a Difference" award!
