Chatfield firefighters rescue 7 people after tubing accident

CHATFIELD, Minn. (KTTC) -- Chatfield firefighters rescued seven people who got caught in fast currents while tubing Sunday on the Root River.

Fillmore County Sheriff Daryl Jensen said a person at a wayside rest area south of Chatfield called 911 just before 5 p.m. after hearing people yelling for help.

The Chatfield Fire Department pulled three adults and four children, ages 7-10, from the Root River.  Chatfield Ambulance transported one child who suffered minor injuries.

Chatfield Fire Chief Keith Bradt said no one in the group had life jackets.
Jensen said the group experienced problems with the high water and rapid current and at least one tube was cut when it got tangled in a tree.

He encouraged people to consider waiting until the waters have receded before using area rivers for recreation.
