Demolition of Chardonnay House underway

Posted: Updated:
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Demolition of the historic Chardonnay House started Thursday morning on Second Street Southwest.

A crew started demolishing the back of the more than 100-year-old house at 723 2nd St. S.W. Thursday morning. The home has been the center of controversy for months after the Rochester City Council decided in May it would not stop demolition. The house met one condition of the Heritage Preservation Ordinance passed last summer, but not the entire criteria.

In the wake of the city's decision, thousands took to Facebook in an effort to save the house. HGTV reality star Nicole Curtis of the show "Rehab Addict" offered her services for free if someone was willing to buy it.

The owner and person purchasing the property was looking to sell to someone who had intentions of preserving it, but few came forward in time.

Rep. Tina Liebling, of Rochester, tweeted this morning, "this is a sad day for #rochmn. Hard to understand why we can't save our beautiful historic buildings."
