ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for all of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa through Thursday night, and Flash Flood Warnings and Flood Warnings are posted for locations in the KTTC viewing area.

KTTC Chief Meteorologist Randy Brock said areas of heavy rain will continue across portions of Minnesota and Iowa on Thursday.
"We're in a ripe setup for significant flash flooding across the region, so the heavy rain is nothing to take lightly despite the lack of 'severe' storm activity that we typically look at as just hail, damaging wind, and tornadoes," Brock said.

KTTC Meteorologist Ted Schmidt wrote about the 24-hour rainfall amounts in the KTTC Weather Blog.

Schmidt said the weather should improve on Friday with slightly less humidity in the air by the afternoon hours to go with bright sunshine that should help dry things out across the area.

Storms dropped heavy rain early Thursday morning in southeast Minnesota. Highway 65 in Albert Lea is closed between Garfield Avenue and Newton Avenue due to flooding. City officials say that Highway 65 will remain closed until further notice and advised drivers to follow the posted the detour.

The city of Albert Lea is also asking residents to limit water use due to sanitary sewer backups.

In Rochester, the threat of severe weather prompted the Rochester Downtown Alliance to cancel Thursdays on first & 3rd.
