Boat capsizes on North Lake near Red Wing

Posted: Updated:
RED WING, Minn. (KTTC) -- A flat bottom boat capsized on North Lake near Red Wing when a wave came over the front of the boat, leaving three people in the water for three hours.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office said the boat's owner, Dave Schoening, 59, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., grabbed a life jacket and swam approximately 300 yards to shore and called for help about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The operator of the boat, Arthur Arakawa, 63, of Burnsville, and passenger Nancy Gunther, 55, of Young America, hung on to the boat.

Goodhue County Water Patrol, Prairie Island Police, Miesville Fire Department and Red Wing Ambulance responded.

A fisherman transported Prairie Island officers to the capsized boat. Officers pulled Gunther into the fisherman's boat and gave Arakawa a life jacket. But officers were unable to pull Arakawa into the boat so they held on to him and made their way slowly to shore.

The three were checked out at the scene by Red Wing Ambulance.
