First graduating class of Rochester STEM Academy receives its diplomas

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Graduation is a right of passage that the students at Rochester STEM Academy aren't used to seeing, until now.

"This is our first graduating class," said school principal Dr. Bryan Rossi. "We're a small school with about 25 students per grade level, and this is our first senior class with 18 graduating."

Rochester STEM Academy started three years ago with the goal of teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to a diverse population.

"A lot of our students come from the Somali community here because at Rochester STEM Academy we have a very safe and supportive environment with rigorous academics that attracts them to our school," said Rossi.

The students do so well that every graduating senior is headed to college.
"Some will be doctors, some business men, some will be teachers, and some will be nurses.  It all depends on what you like as a student," said class valedictorian Mohamed Nur.

Even as the class of 2014 flip their tassels over to show they have graduated, many parents in the community see this as only the beginning.

"I'm hoping all my six kids graduate from STEM.  The community is supporting this school and how it's growing in the future," said Ali Hassan. He is the father of two kids who are graduating this year.

It's a growth that keynote speaker Sen. Carla Nelson thinks is right where it should be.

"Rochester, Minnesota is the epicenter of the scientific community," said Nelson.

A community that is only growing, as next year's senior class will nearly double with thirty students preparing to graduate.
