ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Wisconsin man was arrested Friday morning in connection with attempted robberies at two Albert Lea hotels.

Albert Lea police were called before 5 a.m. to the Midwestern Inn. Police said Armando Gonzales, 52, allegedly displayed a handgun and demanded keys to an employee's vehicle. The employee locked herself in the hotel office and Gonzales took off without taking the vehicle.

Police checked the motel room registered to Gonzales and found it empty.

Officers also responded shortly after 6:50 a.m. to a report of an attempted robbery with a handgun at the America's Best Value Inn. Police said Gonzales attempted to take a hotel guest's vehicle but couldn't start it. The guest was able to retreat to his room, according to the report.

The Albert Lea Police Department, Freeborn County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol searched the area for Gonzales. A tip led officers to Southeast Marshall and Blake Avenue where they arrested Gonzales at about 7:30 a.m.

Gonzales was taken to the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center. He is facing charges of aggravated robbery, attempted motor vehicle theft, as well as tampering with a motor vehicle and theft.
