Banfield Elementary School in Austin celebrates 60th anniversary

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- A celebration of 60 years of learning took place Wednesday morning at Banfield Elementary school in Austin.

Sixty balloons were released into the sky with each one commemorating a different year of the school's existence. The event was tied in with an Earth Day cleanup as many of the students picked up garbage around the school Wednesday morning.

In the days leading up to the celebration, teachers showed the kids a brief history of how life at the school has changed over the years.

"Whether it be lunch boxes from the 50s and the 60s, 8-track tapes from the 70s, we put them in our display case and the kids and parents they were just looking at that and wondering, "What is this stuff that they were using?" said Jeff Roland, principal of Banfield Elementary School.

All of the balloons released on Wednesday have a tag with the school's address on it. If you find one of the biodegradable balloons, you are urged to write down where you found it and send it in to the school.
