BB gun found in trash can at Law Enforcement Center

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A BB gun was found in a trash can at the Law Enforcement Center on the same day the Olmsted County Board approved new security infrastructure for the building.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office said a janitor discovered the BB gun just before 9 p.m. Tuesday in a trash can on the first floor.

The discovery came just hours after new security enhancements for Government Center were approved by the Olmsted County Board.

The sheriff's office said the area where the gun was found in the trash can will not be a part of the weapons screening approved Tuesday. The county board unanimously approved the construction of a weapons screening operation on the second floor of the building and higher.

The addition will cost $5.7 million using county reserves and some bonding dollars for the project.

Commissioners say now they have a few months to draw up plans for construction with architects before beginning an official bidding process.

Construction could begin as soon as the end of this year, but it will take at least 10 months to build in the new security.

As for the BB gun found on the first floor, an investigation is underway as to how it got there.
