Hunt is on for new tenant for Nelson's Market Place building in Albert Lea

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Last week, 80 employees of Nelson's Market Place learned the supermarket that serves Albert Lea would be closing in a month and they'll be out of a job.

Randy Kehr, Executive Director of the Albert Lea-Freeborn Chamber of Commerce, said he's determined to keep a positive spin on things.

The immediate short-term impact will be on the approximately 80 people out of work come the middle of May.

Kehr said Workforce Development Inc. could send in a task force to help those people find new jobs.

For the long-term, a void will need to be filled on that side of town, a task Kehr said is already underway.

"I know there are people working on it today in finding a replacement operator for that location," said Kehr. "Hopefully the real solution is to move forward and create a new image on that side of town."

Nelson's Market Place will close on May 17.

Chris Nelson, one of the owners, said Nelson's just cannot compete with Walmart and Hy-Vee and the building on West Main Street is just too big. Nelson said he'll be interviewing for a new job himself in the Faribault area where he lives.
