Nelson's in Albert Lea closing

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Last week. 80 employees of Nelson's Market Place learned the supermarket that serves Albert Lea would be closing in a month.  They'll be out of a job.

So where do those 80 employees who work at Nelson's go from here?

The Executive director of the Albert Lea-Freeborn Chamber of Commerce says he's determined to keep a positive spin on things.
The immediate short-term impact will be on the approximately 80 people out of work come the middle of May.
Executive Director Randy Kehr says if necessary WorkForce Development Inc. could send in a task force to help those people find new jobs.
For the long term, a void will need to be filled on that side of town, a task Kehr says is already underway.
"I know there are people working on it today in finding a replacement operator for that location.  Hopefully the real solution is ton move forward and create a new image on that side of town," said Executive Director of the Albert Lea-Freeborn Chamber of Commerce Randy Kehr.

Nelson's Market Place will close on May 17th.
Chris Nelson, one of the owners, says Nelson's just cannot compete with Wal-Mart and Hy-Vee and the building on West Main Street is just too big.  Nelson says he'll be interviewing for a new job himself in the Faribault area where he lives.
