WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is returning once again to a grief-stricken corner of America to mourn with families of those killed last week at Fort Hood. He's reprising his role as chief comforter as he offers solace to the nation in the face of another tragedy.

It's a duty that Obama has had to fulfill often.

Less than five years ago, Obama adopted that role for the first time as he mourned the victims of another mass shooting at the Texas Army post.

Since then, the names of communities like Tucson, Aurora and Newtown have become synonymous with tragedy. Each incident has challenged the president to try to find ways to impart meaning to senseless death and look for policy solutions to violence in the U.S.
