BEAVER, Minn. (KTTC)-- The spring thaw is shutting down a 7 mile stretch of a Minnesota road.
Highway 74north of Beaver will be closed down on Wednesday.
The section ofroad runs through the Whitewater Wildlife Area and is the only gravel road inthe state of Minnesotamaintained by MnDOT.
The road closesdown frequently during the spring thaw.
Officials saythe water level was approaching the level of the road, and they want to protectthe safety of drivers as well as preventing vehicles from damaging the soft, muddy road.
"It's kindof swampy marshland," said Mike Dougherty of MnDOT. "People thatreally follow wildlife and birds, they love that area, but at the same time wewant people to be safe and make sure that that road maintains itself."
The closure isindefinite until conditions improve.
MnDOT and Winona Countyofficials say they believe the issue is isolated to this stretch of roadway.
