AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- Austin police are investigating a shooting after a man was shot in the face and sent to the hospital Monday afternoon.

Austin Police Lt. John Mueller said a 22-year-old man was shot in the face in the 800 block of Ninth Avenue Southwest. The man was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System Austin by someone he knew, and later airlifted by Mayo One to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus. After the victim was dropped off at the hospital, four people left in a car. Mueller said the car was later found by police, and the people inside were questioned. The gun has not been found, and detectives are still investigating.

"It's all under investigation to determine if it was an accident or what kind of incident it was," Mueller said. "That's all being investigated through those interviews and any evidence."

Police said no one is in custody, and the public was not in danger during the time of the shooting.

While the extent of the man's injuries are unknown, police said the facial wound may have been life threatening.
