BEMIDJI, Minn. (KTTC/AP) -- Police in Bemidji arrested a woman Friday in the death of a 6-year-old girl who died after she was somehow locked out of her home in the brutal cold back on February 27.
Mercedes Mayfield was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene that morning, with the temperature 27 below zero and a wind chill of 40 below. The child apparently was locked out of her apartment building at 924 Carter Circle SE. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed the girl died of hypothermia.
Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin identified the woman arrested as Rachel Downer, the child's 22-year-old cousin. Downer is expected to be charged in court on Monday. She was booked on suspicion of Second Degree Manslaughter and Felony Neglect of a Child.
