ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A friendly conversation between a Kwik Trip clerk and a Rochester police officer led to the shut down of a counterfeit cash operation and three arrests overnight.

Capt. John Sherwin said an officer was paying for his items at Kwik Trip at 1941 South Broadway just after 2 a.m. Friday.

The clerk told the officer that a customer had tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill. Capt. Sherwin said when the officer left the store, the clerk used the intercom to ask him to come back in after another customer was attempting to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.

When questioned by the officer, the customer opened his wallet to pay for his item with a dollar instead, and the officer noticed what seemed to be several more counterfeit bills. That's when police said Jack Kluver, 26, of Winona, became non-compliant and was arrested.

The driver waiting for Kluver took off. Officers looked at surveillance video, and located the car in the Motel 6 parking lot. When officers inspected the car, they noticed a printer, and what appeared to be a paper cutter.

Officers went to the motel room the driver was staying in. Police reportedly found syringes, and instruments used to sell illegal drugs.

Officers arrested 35-year-old Ricky Orr and 29-year-old Allison Tjossem.

"When you start to pull on a zipper it all opens up, and I think this was the case in this whole investigation," Capt. Sherwin said. "An officer went in just for a simple coffee break and it grew into something much more. The spark that started a fire."

The car was impounded, and there was a warrant issued to inspect the motel room Friday morning.
