Fight norovirus with oregano

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (KTTC) -- A substance in oregano oil may help attack norovirus, an intestinal illness that often affects nursing homes, cruise ships, hospitals and schools.

Researchers at the University of Arizona have found that carvacrol -- which gives oregano its smell and flavor -- breaks down the outer coat of the virus and could potentially be used as a food and surface sanitizer.

Carvacrol would also be a non-toxic, harmless product to use in facilities where people may be more vulnerable to bleach or alcohol based cleaners.
