Rochester figure skaters prep for sectional championship

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- While winter athletes around the world are gearing up for the Olympics, a group of young figure skaters here in Rochester is practicing for a different competition.

They're hoping to make nationals, and they're just one step away.

The Rochester Figure Skating Club's Intermediate and Open Juv Synchronized Skating teams are competing over the weekend in Chicago for the Section Championships.

We stopped in during the Intermediate team's practice Wednesday evening.

If the group places among the top four in this weekend's competition, they will qualify for the national competition, something that hasn't happened to a Rochester team in years.

Synchronized skating is a lot like much of the skating you see on television but with more moving parts, and even though synchronized skaters compete on a national and international scale, they are left out of one major competition.

"Synchro isn't in the Olympics," said Maggie Panetta one of the team captains. "It's just really really exciting to be able to watch our sport as an independent thing. A lot of girls on synchro do dance or pairs and that's very similar"

Team leaders say after taking things slow last year to build their skills, they think they do have a real shot at a trip to the national competition.
