Propane prices soaring in Minnesota

PLAINVIEW, Minn. (KTTC) -- A natural gas shortage is sweeping the country, and it's causing propane prices to soar to levels we haven't seen in nearly 15 years in Minnesota.

According to High Plains Co-Op in Plainview, propane inventories have been low since the fall after using propane dryers for crops following a wet harvest season.

This was followed by the Arctic blast that had people across the state and country cranking up the heat.

The supply shortage is now at a five-year low in our state. With a pipeline that used to pump propane into the region now being repurposed, prices are spiking.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports residential propane costs $2.33 a gallon in Minnesota -- the highest it has been in the past 14 years.

It is unclear how long the trend in climbing prices will last.
