Salvation Army holds yearly Christmas Dinner

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- While many of us are lucky enough to gather with families for a traditional Christmas meal, there are many in the community who are alone or don't have the resources.

Wednesday the Salvation Army held its annual Christmas dinner.

Dozens of people and volunteers filled the room, listening to Christmas carols, enjoying the meal and receiving gifts.

For one volunteer, the day was about getting out and helping others during her own difficult time.

"I can't be with my family this year, and I'm at Mayo Clinic getting treatments and waiting on a transplant eventually," said Debbie Diedrich. "I'm going through a lot of medical complications right now. I wanted to go out and be with people this Christmas."

And for those who came for a meal, they say its about more than the food, it's about the family and community they feel when they come in to the Salvation Army.

"Two years ago I lost my boy," said Phyllis, a woman who came for a meal. "They haven't found him yet. Christmas is hard for me, but when I came to Salvation army...it's really a blessing. They've welcomed us."

Proceeds from the yearly Red Kettle campaign go to help put on the dinner.
