La Crosse, WI (WXOW) – Before you begin your holiday travel, the Onalaska Police department is warning everyone to take extra precautions to protect your home.
Police said the number of home and car burglaries increase during the holiday season because many people are out of town.
Before leaving, homeowners should check to make sure their doors and windows are locked.
If you are going out of town for several days, ask a neighbor or friend to help out.
"Make arraignments with people to come and take care of your snow removal or take care of things such as mail or your paper delivery," said DARE Officer, Leah Myers. "Maybe leave a light on somewhere in the house."
Myers adds it's important not to advertise what type of gifts might be in the home. If you received a new TV for a gift, break down the box so it fits into a trash container. If you leave the box laying in front of your home, Myers said you are just making your home an easy target.
